AVP Song Suggestion: The Simple Things by Jim Brickman

Jojo & Ciara from Bong Sare on Vimeo

I love, love this song by Train.  But then again, I can have another AVP, can't I?  ;-P

When I first watched this same day edit (SDE), I couldn't resist researching who sang the song, and what were the words used for the lyrics.  It turns out that it was another chart-topper by Jim Brickman.  Great vocals + nice lyrics + a romantic violin rendition = a hit AVP music!  I'd definitely find a way to use this for one of my AVPs.

The Simple Things by Jim Brickman

Hey, time won't wait
Life goes by
Every day's a brand new sky
Every tear
Comes to dry
All that really matters in this crazy world
Is you and I together, baby
Just remember

The first leaves off the tree
The way you look at me
A thousand chiming church bells ring
The simple things are free
The sun, the moon, the stars
The beating of two hearts
How I love the simple things
The simple things just are

So here we go
Let's just dance
Teach my soul to take this chance
Put my heart
In your hands
Out of all the moments that we leave behind
Turn around and tell me baby
We'll remember

The thunder and the rain
The way you say my name
After all the clouds go by
The simple things remain
The sun, the moon, the stars
The beating of two hearts
How I love the simple things
The simple things just are

Oh, the ocean and the sky
The way we feel tonight
I know that it's the love that brings
The simple things to life
The sun, the moon, the stars
The beating of two hearts
I love the way the simple things
The simple things just are
I love the way the simple things
The simple things just are
The simple things just are
The simple things
Just are

AVP Song Suggestion : Marry Me (First Dance Mix) by Train

The first time I heard this song, I knew I was going to use this for the wedding.  I haven't decided yet whether to use it for the Intro / Welcome AVP, Prenup AVP1 (Imagine Nation), Prenup AVP2 (DIY Version), or our First Dance as it is aptly labeled 'First Dance Mix' (that is, if I ever get to learn how to dance properly).  I love this mix, and I'll just figure out where I will use it.

Turn up the volume and sing along to Train's Marry Me

Forever can never be long enough for me
Feel like I've had long enough with you
Forget the world now, we won't let them see
But there's one thing left to do

Now that the weight has lifted
Love has surely shifted my way

Marry me today and every day
Marry me if I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will, say you will

Together can never be close enough for me
Feel like I am close enough to you
You wear white and I'll wear out the words I love you

And you're beautiful

Now that the wait is over
And love and has finally shown her my way

Marry me today and every day
Marry me if I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will, say you will

Promise me you'll always be happy by my side
I promise to sing to you when all the music dies

And marry me today and everyday
Marry me if I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe
Say you will, say you will marry me

Vedasto Leather Bags

What do you plan to give to your principal sponsors and both of your parents (at least for the female ones)?  It's easy shopping for the males --- ties, hankies, and the works.  But to shop for females is quite a feat since there are a myriad of choices out there.  I really have a hard time thinking about what gift to give, since those who will be our sponsors practically have everything.  Until I remember one of my all-time favorite leather goods supplier / vendor:  Vedasto Leather Goods.  Take a look at their sample bags, and you'll see what I mean:

I'd love to own one of these
 Simple but beautiful
This will be perfect for a weekday
 Cute details
 The banig-inspired bag
Something to brighten up your day
A twist to the usual rectangular shoulder bag
 Gray or tan?
 Bright is in
 Vegetable tan leather
I love this too.  I have the matching pencil cases and purse
I love this.  I think this one only costs Php 3,000
 Happy colors
Something to put your wallet and beauty essentials
A two-toned goodie

Vedasto makes leather bags, purses, wallets and brief cases.  They also manufacture traditional give-aways like key chains, cups, mugs and other products depending on orders.  All goods are proudly 100% Filipino made.

PCOS and Cervical CA

No, this isn't about elections :-P

If you happen to be having irregular monthly periods, uncontrollably gaining weight, or experiencing unusual hair growths as I did, then you just might have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or (PCOS).   I used to think that I have no need of visiting an ob-gyne since I am not married and since I am not sexually experienced.  Good thing my mom prodded me to go to the hospital.  Almost immediately after I told her about my observations about myself, my ob said I must have PCOS.

Here is a brief description of PCOS from wikipedia:

Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the most common female endocrine disorders. It is a genetic disorder that can be inherited from either parent.  PCOS produces symptoms in approximately 5% to 10% of women of reproductive age (12–45 years old) and is thought to be one of the leading causes of female subfertility.[1][2][3]   The principal features are anovulation, resulting in irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, ovulation-related infertility, and polycystic ovaries; excessive amounts or effects of androgenic (masculinizing) hormones, resulting in acne and hirsutism; and insulin resistance, often associated with obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol levels. The symptoms and severity of the syndrome vary greatly among affected women.
If you're like me who easily gets intimidated or turned off by stuff that make my nose bleed, then here's a brochure about PCOS which I got from a leading hospital here in the Metro.  Click on the images to see them in their larger, clearer, original format:

Though this may be bad news at first, I thank God that I mustered enough courage to submit myself to an ob-gynecologist.  She patiently explained what I was going through, thoroughly discussed the treatment process, and assured me that she will take good care of me until I no longer have PCOS (Yes, it does go away and gets treated).  She then asked me to go through a transrectal ultrasound to confirm if I have PCOS.  It was not painful but it was truly uncomfortable and felt so weird.  The ultrasound lasted for about 30 minutes.  It reconfirmed my doc's theory earlier that I have this condition.

Initially, my ob gave me Duphaston tablet, 2x a day for 5 days.  I then had my monthly after the tenth day since I first took it.  I stopped Duphaston after I had my first day, then replaced it with Glucoform (Metformin), 2x a day, which will become my "maintenance medicine" until my ob tells me to stop.

I am just grateful to God that I am basically fine, and that PCOS is something that I can somehow manage.  With regular exercise, proper diet and faithfulness in taking the meds, I should be back to normal soon.  Praise God for using my mom to prod me to go to the hospital asap!  Who knows what would have happened if I did not listen to her advice?  These things can get worse, and then I'll just be regretting my disobedience later.

On my way out of the clinic, my doc's secretary gave me this brochure on cervical cancer.  She encourages single ladies to have themselves vaccinated before they get married for higher chances of protection. I do believe in getting prepared beforehand, rather than doing all the things you can to be cured later on.  However, I still haven't mustered enough courage to go through that injection after having been rushed to the ER thrice since May this year due to repeated bouts with infection.  Here's the brochure.  Please click on the images to see them in a clearer, larger format.

What are my lessons from this experience?
  1. Trust in God and just pray.  God will not allow us to go through what He did not prepare us for.  I have a thing about going to hospitals and getting checked up.  I hate experiences like this.  Good thing I have my mom with me.  Prayers calmed me down.  Prayers really work!
  2. Obey your parents.  God gave us parents for our own protection and good.  In my case, God used my mom to prod me to go to the doctor.  I wouldn't have gone there without her constant reminder.  I am so glad I obeyed, and I found out what is happening to me.  So now I am undergoing treatment, which means I will recover earlier, compared to going through the treatment at a later time, and therefore delaying my recovery.
  3. Do your share.  I was told to lose weight, eat the right food and take my meds on time.  Yes, I need to be more disciplined, and this was a good reminder to start working on the things that are within my control.
  4. Discuss this with your partner.  I am just so glad that my H2B took it all positively.  Due to work constraints, he couldn't accompany me to the hospital.  But he was very positive about it.  He even assured me that we will still push through with our wedding plans even if we couldn't conceive.  We'll adopt dogs just in case.  ;-)   (Sorry M, but I'll even be praying we will have twins!)
  5. Have a positive attitude.  I surrendered my condition to God.  He is my Maker, and He knows whatever is happening to me.  I trust that He and I can pull through this.  Anyway, as I mentioned in #3, I will even be praying to have twins by next year.  PCOS is reversible, so always have that positive attitude.
I encourage all the women out there to subject themselves to an OB-Gyn.  It is a priceless experience.  Nothing can match your peace of mind and health and well-being.  Please, do it for your and your loved ones' sake.

More reception venues in Pasig City

If you've read my previous post about four possible reception venues in Pasig City but still haven't felt the 'it' factor, then let me add some more options within the same city.

Since 2008, we've been holding our Commencement Exercises at the Tanghalang Pasigueño.  I think two seasons ago, Pilipinas Got Talent of ABS-CBN Channel 2 also shot one of its semi-final rounds here. The place is pretty new and well-kept. The ambience is really inviting, and the sound system was perfect.  For Valentine's Day 2009, I brought my mom here to watch Richard Poon sing.

Tanghalang Pasigueño is a huge events place with a 1,500-seater auditorium named Asemblea Magna.  Thanks to our Mayor Robert 'Bobby' C. Eusebio, who together with his wife Mrs. Maribel Andaya-Eusebio personally designed some areas of the building and conceptualized the furniture and lighting fixtures of the place, we in Pasig now have a venue for big events such as graduations and seminars / conventions. But unknown to many people, this classic and regal structure has many smaller venues within the same building.  It has a 70-seater and a 150-seater airconditioned venues too, depending on the number of your guests.  The lobby itself was also recently transformed to become a wedding reception area, and caterers like Madel's Cuisine have been regulars there.

Here are some magnificent pictures taken at the Tanghalang Pasigueño:

I asked for a brochure of the Tanghalang Pasigueño rental rates, and have them scanned.  Click the pics to see how much each venue costs.  For as low as Php 4,000 for a 60-pax guest list, to Php 10,000 for 300 guests, Tanghalang Pasigueño just might be the venue for your wedding reception.

Reception venue DIY decors

WARNING:  This post will be loaded with lots of pictures.

If money were not an issue, how would you want your reception decors to look like?

Now at 10 months before our planned wedding date, M and I still haven't finalized where our reception will be. All we know is that we want it on the 30th day of August next year, which is also the third and final year of us being boyfriend/girlfriend.  Right now I can only tell you that we want to get married at the Evangelical Church inside the Fort Bonifacio Army Camp.  For the reception, we're considering the nearby Army Officers' Clubhouse which is about 5 minutes away from our church.  Or may be the lovely Atrium of the Enderun Colleges which has garnered quite a number of good reviews for food, venue and service.  If these don't work out, plan B is to do both the ceremony and reception at Light of Love Events Place in Quezon City.  The ceremony will be held at the Integrity or Love function room, then have the reception at the Atrium.  Ah, the options!  And because we haven't finalized the venues yet, I still do not know what to do for my big day as of now.  But thanks to some pictures of our past Junior-Senior promenades, I have some bit of inspirations as the decorations we used for those events were purely DIY projects of the decoration committee.

Here are some snippets:

2008 Juniors' Night @ The Valle Verde Country Clubhouse

The Valle Verde Country Clubhouse is a bit of an old structure.  But it's really beautiful and elegant.  It's surprisingly affordable too.  When we had our Juniors'Night there in 2008, we paid for set meals at around Php 200 per head.  That rate already includes a generous serving of 3 courses including pasta, rice, dessert, bottomless iced tea and coffee.  They have an in-house caterer so everything was smooth and easy.

For our school's first prom, the decor committee hung drapes in the ceiling, and used sinamay as flower pots and invitations.

It was a bit dark when I took this pic as we my cam is a bit lowtech.  But the lighting effect on the drapes was nice.  The lights and sounds supplier did well too, especially during the dancing part.
Blue and yellow gold touches for the cocktail set-ups
Sinamay decors for the names of the guests, invitations and flower pots.
We just asked the caterers of VVCC to use blue cloths for the tables.
DIY table numbers, invitations and flower pots for guest / students' tables
Nice lights

For the backdrop of the stage, the decor committe bought balloons and had them placed on the floor.  They also cut out a silvery material bought from National Bookstore for the lettering of Juniors' Night.  The yellow logo was a cut-out based on their design, while the flowers were styled by one of the decor committee members.

2009 JS Prom @ The Glass Garden

The Glass Garden is a popular events venue in Santolan, Pasig.  It really lives up to its name.  From top to bottom it is enclosed in glass.  But you get the garden feel too, minus the worries about rain.  The strengths of this venue are: beauty of the place, ample parking, super cool airconditioning, and nice staff.  What I just didn't like is the price.  It charges a hefty Php 80,000 for 5 hours of use.  Additional Php 5,000 will charged to your account for every hour extended.

Because we had such a humongous venue, the decor committee had to work double time to beautify the place.  Here's how it turned out:

White / silvery drapes for the ceiling
White Japanese lanterns bought at Divisoria....
The gold circles were DIY.  The teachers cut out big circles, then covered them in gold glitters.
All flower arrangements were DIY.  The teachers sprayed blue food colors and paints on white mums, that's why we had blue flowers for that night.  Amazing!
DIY flower styling and drapes on the tables
See the blue-green flowers on the stairs? They were just sprayed on.  Blue fabric on stairs were DIY too.
Beautiful!

I just can't get enough of the ceiling decors!
Nice ceiling decors!  I love them!

2010 JS Prom @ The Pasig Sports Arena

In 2010, we held our JS Prom at the basketball court right beside our City Hall.  Yes, you read it right:  a big. big basketball court.  We just covered the basketball rings with bronze and gold fabrics, then laid out carpets on the floors.  With simple but carefully-planned designs, it was like being transported to the function hall of a hotel.  Thanks to our decor team, the event was memorable because the students and even teachers were taking photos of the venue.  I myself couldn't resist taking shots!  Here they are:

Stage as styled by the teachers.  The balls on the floor were made by sinamay.  Gold and white / cream fabrics from Divisoria.  Tarpaulin for the backdrop.
Bronze and light gold fabrics on the walls.....who would even think this was a basketball court?

2011 JS Prom @ Silver City

Silver City is a few steps away from Tiendesitas.  It's actually a strip of a building (is it a mall?), and is located at the corner of Julia Vargas and C5.  It's a huge, huge place, but because there are curtains all over, you have no view of what's outside.  It costs Php 80,000 to rent it for 5 hours, but it's also negotiable.  What we did to cut costs is to source out everything else.  For the 2011 prom, we had a Hollywood theme.  The stairs leading to the Silver City hall were decked with stars bearing the teachers' names!  The decor team did a great job copying what the original ones looked like in California.  Too bad, I didn't get to take a photo of that one.  But here are some snippets:
Mock table set-up by the caterer

Film reels and stars, including letterings, were DIY from paper, cardboards and other materials from Divisoria and National Bookstore

I wonder how my own reception party venue will look like  :-)
